| Grade: B Sensuality: Warm Drop Dead, Gorgeous! is a sequel to Hello, Gorgeous!, which also earned a B from me. |
I know that these days it's un-p.c. to love MJD given "bad author behavior", but for the life of me I can't work up a lather over things she's said online.
Here's BYRON's blurb of the book:
Um, does this weapon make me look fat?
FAST. POWERFUL. DEADLY. WITH BITCHIN' HIGHLIGHTS.
Ah, weddings -- every single woman's reminder that she'll probably die alone, covered in cat hair and dressed in unflattering sweatpants. And as far as bad wedding experiences go, my friend Stacy's could take the cake. 1) I'm dateless 2) I'm a bridesmaid, and 3) Someone just attempted to whack the groom (known, no kidding, as The Boss) in the middle of the ceremony. Whoa... hang on. I might not relish reception food or doing the Electric Slide, but anyone who tries to ruin a girlfriend's big day by bumping off her true love will have to go through me first.
So now I, assistant hairdresser Jenny Branch, am helping to hunt down a real-life bad guy, and the prime suspect is Kevin Stone, who claims to be working undercover for a group called Covert Ops Protection. Riiiight. All of this is hard to believe -- my new role as spy-in-training, the fact that I'm surrounded by people with freaky superhuman powers, and most of all, the way that this unbelievably sexy villain/double agent/whatever Kevin is makes every (and I mean every) nerve-ending tingle the second he comes into view... and it appears to be mutual. Living with flying bullets and constant danger is a long way from sweeping up hair at the end of the day. But if it means being around Kevin, a girl could get used to it...
MaryJanice Davidson's sequel to HELLO, GORGEOUS is a nonstop thrill-ride of secret agents, wickedly seductive superspies, and deadly weapons, where a fearless, funny heroine and an irresistible hero could find themselves saving the universe... and setting each other's worlds on fire....
This really is a nonstop thrill-ride...I read the book in one sitting and laughed so loud that people began to stare at me. Typical complaints about MJD's books are that they lack character development, rely solely on quick pacing and funny dialogue, and that her heroines are alike. If you want to get picky about it, that's basically true, but in this story the heroine, while as mouthy as any, is also a genius, and she's a darker sort of heroine than MJD generally writes. The entire thing zips by in an instant, and as far as reality goes, there isn't any, but when you're dealing with nanotechnology and so many secret spy agencies that it's impossible to keep up with their acronyms, it's clear that reality was never meant to be important.
If MJD hasn't worn out her welcome with you, I'd say this one is well worth reading - funny, sexy, and exciting. Even though it's been fully two years since I read Hello, Gorgeous!, it didn't take long for me to get up to speed, and if you haven't read the earlier book, it's probably better to read it first...I'm sure it's in paperback by now. Oh, did I mention that DD,G! is only available in trade size right now? I generally wait for trade size books to be reissued as paperbacks, but Brentano's was having a buy three, get one free sale...
TTFN, Laurie Likes Books
I'm pretty sure I voted for this as my favourite funny for last year. I've
decided MJD must be my new guilty pleasure. Only because so much of what
people say about her books are absolutely true but I still end up laughing.
Then I get to the end and get mad because I paid 14 bucks for a 200 page
book. I just wish I was getting more bang for my buck. So I'll keep
buying the Betsy books and this series (I never understood the Royal series
and managed to keep myself from buying the second in it) but I'm hoping to
get them at cheaper prices so the ripped off feeling doesn't hit when the
story suddenly ends.
